It is equally challenging to train teachers for value education and provide them with suitable teaching- learning material. Difficult they may be but these challenges have to be met if we want a better education for our future citizens and a better future.

Morocco: The rising star of African Mining

by Dr. Amit Tripathi As soon as one mentions Morocco in the mining world, phosphate comes to mind. True, Morocco is one of world’s leading producers of high-quality phosphate. It has world’s largest phosphate resource base and produces about 15% of world’s supply. Phosphate exports are Morocco’s largest forex earner along with tourism. Famous Personalities – Unknown Geologists -1

Because of his degree in medicine, Voysey was never promoted, (much the same way as D.N.Wadia was never promoted in GSI in his entire service as he had no degree in geology). Voysey prepared the first geological map in India, of an area around Hyderabad and later an entire geological map of India –though it was a sketch map only with barely 4/5 types of rocks depicted on it. This was in 1821! that is much before the establishment of GSI (1851)

Geology Fraud: The infamous case of Bre-X and the origin of JORC standard

Mineral exploration /mining are full of outrageous examples of fraud. Ethics in this is as important as in all canons of metaphysics in life. Bre-X mining scandal is the biggest in prospecting history. Bre-X a group of companies of Canada brought the property rights in Busang river of Indonesia for gold in 1993 and byContinue reading “Geology Fraud: The infamous case of Bre-X and the origin of JORC standard”

Exploring Minerals in Latin America: Challenges of a different business culture

When investors consider a mineral exploration project, they weigh two risks – “Below the ground” and “above the ground”. Below the ground risks are technical and have technical solutions – resources, geometry, geotechnical, reserves, beneficiation, metallurgy etc can all be tested. Above the ground risks, however, are more complex. These are finance, market, jurisdiction, infrastructure, environment, andContinue reading “Exploring Minerals in Latin America: Challenges of a different business culture”

Indian Ocean Region as a source of critical strategic raw materials

India enjoys considerable goodwill and strategic dominant position over China in this region and supply lines would be away from direct Chinese influence. IOR is also a prolific mineral rich region where most governments have mining and exploration friendly policies and welcome investment through friendly policy levers. Most of the countries in the region particularlyContinue reading “Indian Ocean Region as a source of critical strategic raw materials”

Role of CO2 in the formation of gold bearing ores

There are many school of thoughts prevailing in the role of CO2 playing in the formation of gold bearing ores. As on today there is a heavy gold rush, it has become very important to know the present day scenario on the genesis of formation of gold and associated metals and the various possibilities of locatingContinue reading “Role of CO2 in the formation of gold bearing ores”

Rare Earth Elements: India’s critical strategic deficiencies and Chinese dominance – Problems and Solutions

Opinion- by Sri Pramod Kumar, fmr Addl Director, AMD: on “Mineral System” based classification of deposits

The most challenging question in exploration is “why an element is there where it is?” Hence to synthesize the whole gamut of concept of  mineral deposits, its possible origin, type, classification and association with other minerals is a good idea over the routine space and time concept. All deposits are unique in nature and theContinue reading “Opinion- by Sri Pramod Kumar, fmr Addl Director, AMD: on “Mineral System” based classification of deposits”

Opinion – by Dr. V. Ganesan, fmr Director, GSI: on “Mineral System” based deposit classification for earth mapping resources

Relationship exists between mineral systems/ore deposits, principal commodities and critical minerals. Very good illustration have been made in clear cut pictures explaining the various tectonic domain wherein what type of deposits are formed. By repeated explanations with world / Indian  examples have to be given to the Geologists community by showing the models where oneContinue reading “Opinion – by Dr. V. Ganesan, fmr Director, GSI: on “Mineral System” based deposit classification for earth mapping resources”

Q: What happens when we exploit all the mineral resources? What happens when deposits around the world start depleting?

Simple answer is yes and no. Mineral resources are finite, however, the resource pool is so vast that it tends to feel like infinite. Reserves are finite at FIXED level of price; FIXED level of input cost, FIXED level of technology, and a fixed level of SOCIETAL demand. Since all these components are continuously changing,Continue reading “Q: What happens when we exploit all the mineral resources? What happens when deposits around the world start depleting?”

Mineral Exploration, a startup ecosystem

Mineral exploration in India is treated as a subset of the mining industry. In tech parlance this will the equivalent of framing laws for Google, Microsoft, TCS, Infosys and expecting the one man startup to match these giants in terms of infrastructure, capacity and financing. Such a policy would kill the tech startups before theyContinue reading “Mineral Exploration, a startup ecosystem”

White paper inputs for mineral exploration policy

Mineral Exploration Business is the way forward

Most Private Entrepreneurs, Geologists, Mining Engineers and also PSUs strongly believe that the introduction of auctioning even for grant of exploration license (CL=PL cum ML) has taken away the rights of individuals and companies to select potential mineral-bearing areas and file applications. Auctioning has not only prevented Resource Maximization & Utilization but also heavily reducedContinue reading “Mineral Exploration Business is the way forward”
